It had been a long time since he had even touched an egg, with the food shortages over the past five years, so it was no shock to him that his skill in painting them had faded. He had forgotten to let the first layer of colors dry before he started the second, by then it was too late and he had to finish the entire egg in that style to save face.

He smiled at his little memorial to his sister after adding her name to the painted and dried egg. It was sloppy but it got the point across, and it made him happy.
